We construct Belyi maps having specified behavior at finitely many points. Specifically, for any curve C defined over Q, and any disjoint finite subsets S, T ⊂ C(Q), we construct a finite morphism φ : C → P such that φ ramifies at each point in S, the branch locus of φ is {0, 1,∞}, and φ(T ) ∩ {0, 1,∞} = ∅. We describe an algebro-geometric approach to Vakil-Zinger’s desingularization of the main component of the moduli of genus one stable maps to P [6, 7]. The new approach provides complete local structural results for this moduli space as well as for the desingularization of the entire moduli space and should fully extend to higher genera.
